Welcome to The Raw Word

The Raw Word reports on small town American journalism. Topics include writing, editing, page design, photography, editorial stance, newsroom coaching, community relations, ethics and more. The Raw Word is written by a staff that has combined experience of more than 25 years in newsrooms in Colorado, Michigan, Wisconsin and Nevada.

We plan to share our experiences and knowledge with our fellow journalists, to help them learn their craft and hone their skills.

About The Raw Word

We think working for a small town newspaper is the best job on the planet. We love talking with people, learning about their lives, and helping others understand them and their world. We created The Raw Word because we want to share what we've learned. We have fun going places few people go, seeing things off the beaten path, talking to all kinds of people. Each person has a special story to tell, and we love helping them tell it. We hope The Raw Word will become a repository of interesting stories for anyone to read and at the same time a resource for journalists who want to become the best reporters and editors in the industry.
